We did not include Chinese astrology in this book; it merits treatment of its own on another occasion.
When Mr. Chao was about 40 years old, he became obsessed with trying to unravel the many cryptic things that were spoken through the I-Ching. He was fervently studying one afternoon trying to understand its secrets.
He was so exhausted from his long hours of study that he decided to take a nap, but was disturbed by a rat running around in his room. He angrily threw his ceramic pillow at the rat, trying to hit it or at least scare it away. (In those times in China, pillows were made of ceramic and wrapped with cloth to make them comfortable.) The pillow struck the rat, but it got away unharmed. The pillow took the worst of it however, because it shattered when it hit the ground. Mr. Shao began to clean up the mess and noticed a little piece of paper that had fallen out of the pillow. Naturally, he picked it up, unfolded it, and read what was printed on it: "This pillow will be used to hit a rat and will break on XX day of XXX year." The date on the paper was today!
Mr. Shao was astounded by this incredible prediction. He knew that the author of the little note must be a great master of the I-Ching, and would beg him to become his teacher. Mr. Shao rushed to the shop where he bought the pillow to find out who made it. The shop owner told him it was made by a man who lived over a bridge on the other side of the village. He thanked the shop owner and ran out the door.
He arrived at the house completely out of breath. A man answered the door, but Mr. Shao was disappointed when the man explained that he was not the I-Ching master he had been searching for. The kindly man told him that the master had passed away. Mr. Shao was beside himself with desperation. Refusing to believe his own ears, he again pleaded to meet the author of the little note. Patiently, the man replied that the master had indeed passed away. However, before his death, he predicted that on this exact day a stranger would come looking for him, and become a famous student of his teachings. The man welcomed Mr. Shao inside and gave him the master's books. Shao Kang Jieh then went on to become one of the most famous I-Ching masters and founder of the "Plum Flower" style of I-Ching astrology. Books authored by him are the foundation of modern 1-Ching astrology.
